Worry – How Can a Christian Handle It?
Christians are not supposed to worry, and some people have no struggle with that. My human nature though, has a tendency to worry about everything. Finances, health concerns, relationships with people, the economy… The list could get pretty long.
The fact is that in this life we will never eliminate issues to worry about, but we are to eliminate the worry we have about all the issues. Here are 5 Bible verses about worry and how Christians should handle it.
What to do with worry:
- Jesus suffered while He was here on earth, and He told us that we will suffer too, but He is in control and has won the victory over sin, the world, and every problem. He said, “…In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
- God is our refuge when we are tempted to worry about our circumstances. He knows us, and we can go to Him for protection, provisions, and strength. “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him” (Nahum 1:7, KJV).
- We do not need to carry the weight of the troubles we face. God loves us and wants us to surrender ourselves and our burdens to Him, just as a child does with his or her earthly parents. “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you” (I Peter 5:6-7).
- With every issue and situation, pray instead of worrying. “In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).
- Rejoice, endure, and continue. Romans 12:12 says, “rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer”… We can rejoice in Jesus and in what He has done for us -no matter how rough it gets down here. We can keep going because whatever we face is temporary and brief. Throughout eternity we will have a new life and be with our Lord forever.
God always provides what we need.
For a couple of years now, I have subscribed, via email, to a daily Bible verse of encouragement through KLOVE radio station. Over the past few days, I have received the above verses, and, though they are familiar ones, I need to hear them frequently.
This summer I have worried about a lot of things. I know better, but I sometimes allow my focus to shift from Jesus onto the huge waves of the storms around me. God, in His amazing grace, keeps giving me encouragement, reassurance of His truths, and reminders not to worry but to trust in Him.
I hope that as you meditate on these verses they encourage you as they have encouraged me.
God bless you Christian Kindred!
